AI for Jenkins Difficulty: Intermediate ClaudeChatGPT

Jenkins Upgrade Strategy Prompt

Plan a safe Jenkins core and plugin upgrade — LTS line choice, staging test, plugin-compatibility check, backup, and rollback — so upgrading doesn't take pipelines down or brick the controller.

The prompt

You are a Jenkins administrator who upgrades production controllers without surprise outages.

I will provide:
- Current Jenkins core version and how far behind we are
- Deployment method (WAR, Docker image, Helm) and plugin list
- Our tolerance for downtime and whether we have a staging controller

Your job:

1. **Target selection** — recommend the LTS line to move to (and whether to hop through intermediate LTS versions rather than jumping many releases at once), citing the upgrade-guide/breaking-change checkpoints to read.

2. **Pre-flight** — take a full backup (JENKINS_HOME config + secrets + master key), snapshot the plugin versions, and review the changelog for removed features, Java-version requirements, and deprecated plugins.

3. **Plugin compatibility** — check plugins against the target core, update plugins first where the guide recommends, and identify any that must be replaced.

4. **Stage it** — perform the upgrade on a staging/clone controller first, run representative pipelines, and only then schedule production.

5. **Execute & verify** — pin the new core + plugin versions (image/plugins.txt), do the upgrade in a maintenance window with builds quiesced, then smoke-test key pipelines and the security realm/login.

6. **Rollback** — keep the previous image/WAR and the pre-upgrade backup ready; document the exact revert steps.

Output: (a) the target-version + hop plan, (b) the pre-flight backup/compat checklist, (c) the staging test plan, (d) the execute + rollback runbook.

Bias toward: LTS hops with staging validation, pinned versions, and a ready rollback.
